National Paid Family Leave Proposed by Biden Administration

July 14, 2021

President Biden’s American Family Plan (AFP) will include a proposal for a national, comprehensive parental, medical, and family leave program. The proposal would include guaranteed paid leave during events such as the birth or adoption of a child, or to attend to one’s own serious illness or the illness of a family member. AFP will phase in over 10 years, 12 weeks of paid leave for: parents, caring for a newborn, adopted or foster child; workers tending to their own or a loved one’s serious illness; workers dealing with the effects of a family member’s military deployment or service-related injury; survivors of domestic violence or sexual assault; and workers grieving the loss of a loved one. AFP is within the Biden administration’s American Jobs Plan, a comprehensive infrastructure proposal that will include both physical and “human” infrastructure.
