HHS Directs Georgia to Revise Previously Approved Health Insurance Waiver

June 25, 2021

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) directs the state of Georgia to reevaluate the data used to create a waiver that would provide a private alternative to ACA. The waiver was approved under the Trump administration in November 2020, however, Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, administrator of HHS’ Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, believes there have been enough changes to policy and federal law to reconsider the waiver’s approval. According to Brooks-LaSure, “The state’s proposal for taking away the most popular option for selecting a health care plan – healthcare.gov – could exacerbate our state’s already high rates of uninsured Georgians and inadequate health-care infrastructure.”.
