New State Law Update: New York

With the transition into 2022, new laws are going into effect on the state level across the country. Included in these new laws are changes that directly affect employers’ paid leave policies, harassment and discrimination rights, and vacation days.
2022
- New York expands whistleblower protections effective January 26.
- The law will prohibit private-sector employers from retaliating against employees, former employees, and independent contractors for disclosing or threatening to disclose, to a supervisor or public body, any conduct that they reasonably believe violates any law, rule or regulation, executive order, or any judicial or administrative decision, ruling, or order; or that they reasonably believe constitutes a substantial and specific danger to the public health or safety.
2023
- New York expands Paid Family Leave Act effective January 1.
- Paid Family Leave expands to include up to 12 weeks of paid leave to bond with a new child, to care for a family member with a serious health condition, or to assist a family member who is on active military service.
